Program summary <br>
YouthBuild is a program that involves unemployed young adults in building affordable housing in their communities. It gives youth, ages 18–24, skills in the construction trades coupled with academic training that will lead to a GED. This comprehensive program also includes counseling, peer support groups, driver’s education, leadership training, extracurricular activities and job placement. Another central element is the building of youth leadership skills through leadership training, program decision making and involvement in community issues.<br>

Purpose <br>
To assist the young people in setting and achieving their career development goals for themselves and their family, and support them in dealing with the personal and other issues that are obstacles to success. To aid staff in putting Transitions lessons into practice, making job placement related community partners, and identifying job shadowing, internship, and job placement opportunities for all students. <br>
<br>
Specific duties <br>
Reports to: Transitions Coordinator<br>
1.	Meet individually with each student to set and regularly review IGP (educational and career development goals for self and family). Email IGP updates to staff.<br>
2.	Meet regularly with young people in groups and individually to assess and challenge them on their negative or ineffective attitudes and behaviors. <br>
3.	Serve as a “coach” to interested young people by giving them extra readings, special career development assignments or additional responsibilities. <br>
4.	Prepare students for public speaking opportunities.<br>
5.	Coordinate and attend meetings of the youth policy, service and graduation committees. Arrange training for committee members on leadership skills, and facilitate young people following up on tasks set for themselves. <br>
6.	Coordinate the use of the Transitions curriculum with teachers and other staff members, and assist with classroom teaching of Transitions skills as appropriate. <br>
7.	Plan and coordinate a year long calendar of Career Development events; communicate and coordinate with staff on the events. Set up and arrange for guest speakers or workshop present¬ers in accordance with career goals and learning needs of trainees. <br>
8.	Plan and implement College Readiness workshops for college bound students (note taking, admissions troubleshooting, finding tutors, etc)<br>
9.	Contact college students weekly/bi-weekly to support them and identify and needs they might have or barriers to success.<br>
10.	Assist each staff with job and/or education placement follow-up case notes.  <br>
11.	Obtain copies of alumni check stubs and/or college schedules for student files.<br>
12.	Report case note summary monthly at staff meetings.  <br>
13.	Work with Construction and Transitions staff to identify community partners and student opportunities for Vantage Point (new life experiences, diversity, etc), Job Shadowing, Internship, and Job Placement experiences.  All students should have at least 2 Vantage Point experiences and at least 1 Job Shadowing experience.  Eligible students should be connected with Internships.  All students should be have a clear job, education, or military placement lined up before graduation.<br>
14.	Obtain and compile IGP feedback from staff for all students prior to student evaluations. <br>
15.	Assist students in creating job portfolio, including: resume, pictures of work experience, and letter of recommendation.  Scan copies to keep on file.<br>
16.	Take students to CREW Center (Discover test), KCAC (FAFSA), Ultra Center.<br>
17.	Assist students in creating a budget to track their expenses and a plan for savings.  Students should have a budget based on income during YouthBuild program, as well as a post-graduation budget based on placement income.<br>
18.	Prepare written reports on activities and accomplishments. <br>
19.	Complete daily activity log. Complete weekly AmeriCorps timesheets and bi-weekly YouthBuild Louisville timesheets.<br>

1.	At least three years counseling, job development, life skills training, or career counseling with young adults. <br>
2.	Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology or related field; or equivalent experience and train¬ing working with young people. <br>
3.	Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and implement training workshops for young adults and staff. <br>
4.	Strong commitment to the philosophy of the program: to help young people succeed and reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community. <br>
5.	Ability to establish rapport and relate sensitively to a multiracial and multicultural group of young people. <br>
6.	Knowledge of human service, health, court, and criminal justice system programs, regulations and procedures, and alternative programs. <br>
7.	Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills; and ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people and institutions. <br>
8.	Understanding of issues facing young people in the community where the program is located. <br>
