As can be seen in the pictures, the mirror itself is a spooky-sort of clouded, the mirror film wearing off. I do not know enough about such things to say the following with much confidence, but my understanding is that those who would wish to restore it to its "original" state and purpose can have it "re-silvered" by those who know what they are doing.
However, there are other pretty awesome ideas that have arisen where this piece is concerned...ones I will say in advance that the two men attached to this piece, as described in the notes below, would not only approve of but be kinda delighted by =) This based on both much family lore as well as personal knowledge (will elaborate to those interested lol)
(1) The smoky, spooky, historical features and essence of the item would be a most interesting and fitting accent to rustic historical haunted house-type place
(2) For those artists who could do such a piece justice, the smoky, film-crackled glass could provide a unique canvas of sorts, complimented by the rustic handmade frame
Alright now...the interesting facts about this piece of history:
*The man who originally owned it (or perhaps not originally, but the first in our family) was a WWI Field Artillery Captain, the youngest American captain in WWI...Kermit Roosevelt (Teddy Roosevelt's son) was a "brother captain" in the same unit. It cannot be recalled in family lore whether he had this item when he mustered out of Camp Taylor in 1920 (or if he arrived at Camp Taylor from France with it), but if not he either made or picked the item up at some point between then and his death in the early 1940's.
*This piece was passed down to the man's grandson, who himself was a Civil War historian and re-enactor who carried this mirror on many of his reenactment trips, including two such adventures which found him among Hollywood's finest, as he played an extra in both "Glory" and "North & South: Book II."
