This position is open as of January 9, 2020. River Run Farm is seeking applicants to immediately work part time or full-time employment. We breed, train and race thoroughbreds from our beautiful farm in Southeast Louisville. We currently need a groom to work full or part-time. You must be able to work every Saturday, and a mix of week day afternoon and/or morning shifts. If you have a truck, we'll reimburse expenses and increase your hours with trips to the grain mill, hay pickups, etc. You may pickup additional hours filling in on selected days when someone calls in sick or needs a day off. We need enthusiastic horse lovers interested in working with past and future race winners. While related experience with horses is helpful, other applicable skills may outweigh inexperience. We have had tremendous success hiring retirees who might view this job as an opportunity to get out of the house, work outdoors and get some exercise. If you want to experience the racing industry from birth to that first win, and you are not dependent upon this job as a total source of income, this might just be job you’ve been waiting for.
Here is what this job entails: Watering and feeding horses; turning out, and bringing in horses, including putting on and taking off halters and blankets. Helping with hay, feed bags, etc. We are fairly mechanized and organized and there is not a huge amount of hard manual labor in this job. However, you must be able to lift/carry 50-pound bags easily, and handle 100 pounds bags creatively. Our horses residing on the farm are thoroughbred breeding stock, a stallion, young colts and fillies, and occasionally racing horses home for layup. Applicants with references from prior job(s) with horses will be given preference, but we have successfully trained strong, confident applicants. If you possess mechanical and/or construction skills, additional hours working in the garage and in construction are available. Full-time and part-time applicants will be considered for the job.
The best applicant will be able to distinguish horse sex, color and markings. Experience with broodmares, stallions, foals and young spirited colts and fillies is a plus, but the ability to handle them all and lead them around the farm is absolutely required. If you ride and have training and breaking skills, additional hours may be available. Ability to follow instructions (and remember them from day to day) is a MUST. You must be able to operate small tools, climb a stepladder, install light bulbs, and perform other minor maintenance tasks. Ownership of your own tools and truck is a big plus. If you are able to run errands and make occasional pickups, for which you will be reimbursed, that’s going to weigh in your favor. Ability to safely drive a tractor with manure spreader (without tearing up the barn) is required. Common sense is Deeply Appreciated, as is someone with attention to detail. Experience helping with wraps, injuries, medication, etc. would be nice, but we are very willing to provide training and assistance for this. This job needs a self-starter who enjoys working independently. Due to the extreme fire hazard around bedding and hay this is a NON-SMOKING property. Consumption of alcoholic beverages on our property is prohibited.
During the winter, horses are fed in the morning and then turned out. The morning shift cleans stalls and performs light maintenance work. The afternoon shift brings the horses back into the barn and feeds again. You will be considered an employee and applicable taxes will be withheld. The pay week runs from Monday to Sunday and is paid the Friday following. We provide all of the tools for this job and contract labor will not be considered. A valid social security number issued in your name is required. We do check references. We are located at 10603 Broad Run Road off Seatonville Road, near Fern Creek and Jeffersontown.
You must be 18 or older to apply. PLEASE RESPOND BY EMAIL TO THE AD and let us know why you are the best candidate for the position. Please DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS with your reply. Attachments will not be opened. Email with your specific relevant experience and your contact information, plus a bit about yourself and your availability. If you merely send us a resume it will not even be reviewed. Tell us in your own words why you are the right applicant for the job. This position is for immediate hire to current local residents. We need a reliable candidate who will report for duty on time when scheduled, in good weather and bad, and therefore applicants who live in close proximity to the farm will be given preference. Be prepared to interview today. Thanks for your interest.
